Alonzo Hawk (Keenan Wynn) ist ein skrupelloser Immobilienhändler, der inmitten von San Fransisco ein gigantisches Einkaufszentrum bauen will. Ein einziges Anwesen fehlt ihm allerdings noch: das viktorianische Haus der Witwe Steinmetz (Helen Hayes).
