Die alleinstehende Englischlehrerin Linda ist vierzig geworden und hat über ihrer Liebe zur Literatur glatt das wahre Leben vernachlässigt. Bewusst wird ihr das eigentlich erst, als ihr ehemaliger Lieblingsschüler Jason in die Stadt zurückkehrt. Der ist in New York als Bühnenautor gescheitert, hat aber ein Theaterstück im Gepäck, für das sich Linda begeistert. Sie sorgt dafür, dass es an ihrer Highschool aufgeführt wird. Als sie Jason auch persönlich näherkommt, bleibt das dem Umfeld nicht lange verborgen.
